CCM- Comitato Collaborazione Medica is an INGO founded in 1968 in Italy and specialized in the health sector. Its core mission is contributing to the development processes which safeguard and promote the right to health, by acting with an integrated approach on the health needs and by influencing the socio-economical determinants.  CCM aims at improving the health conditions of the population in low-income countries and intervenes through projects of international cooperation, education to the world citizenship, advocacy activities, and interventions of health promotion in the context of migration processes.

CCM cooperates with the local communities and authorities to strengthen and develop the health systems, to improve accessibility to and the quality of prevention and healthcare services.  CCM cooperates with local organizations and promotes an integrated and holistic approach to health by working directly with other local and international organizations in cross-cutting sectors which help the complete well-being of the individual.

In Somali region, Filtu woreda, CCM, in partnership with VSF-Suisse (leading agency) and international livestock research institute (ILRI), has been implementing a 4-year project that will support both pastoralists and agro-pastoralists communities.

Within the framework of HEAL project, CCM seeks to recruit a professional who will assist to implement one of the three components of One Health, the approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

Job Purpose

The Environmental expert will support in implementing a multidisciplinary project (HEAL) to promote the health and resilience of pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities in Filtu woreda.

He/she will provide technical support through regular supportive supervision; strengthening local-scale monitoring, recording, visualization, sharing, analysis and participatory interpretation of weather data, hazards and impacts information, among different actors and levels.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with project partners and Field Coordinator, the environmental expert is responsible for the planning, implementation, and monitoring of environmental activities in the project area and support the integration of the environmental component into the One Health approach
  • In collaboration with project partners and Field Coordinator, she/he proactively contributes to the collection and analysis of data, both as environmental data (e.g. weather, natural resources) as such and as integrated data with human and animal health
  • Under the supervision of the project partners and the Field Coordinator, the environmental expert will organize and conduct the training activities and supportive supervisions for one health community workers and project staff based on the identified needs
  • Ensure coordination with the project partners and any other relevant stakeholders
  • Preparation and timely collection and presentation of the project results
  • Prepare periodic reports Monthly Quarterly Annually.
  • Identifies environmental-related gaps and needs in the area that may be addressed through future interventions
  • In collaboration with the Field coordinator, contribute and participate in defining project management plan and contribute on environmental aspect her/his expertise.
  • Participate in the stakeholder’s engagement process, supporting the establishment of multi-stakeholder platforms (MSIPs) in each intervention site
  • Support Field Coordinator in dealing with any other tasks as may be required

Specific Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the CCM Field coordinator.

  • Organize participatory meetings with HEWs, CAHWs, and MSIP members, to identify the main indicators related to weather, hazards, and impacts to the human, animal, and environmental health.
  • Support in preparing training activities and materials for HEWs, CAHWs and conducting them. together with other professional trainer in the field or through remote support
  • Facilitate the procurement of the weather instruments, the equipment needed for the installation of the manual weather stations, and the devices for the data collection in the field (smartphones) with the guidance of Trim (CCM partner).
  • Provide, in coordination and agreement with local institutions and TriM, a list of locations and specific sites where to install the manual weather stations, following the guidelines provided by which will validate the proposed locations.
  • Coordinate the installation of the manual weather stations in the previously identified locations.
  • Supervise the functionality of the instruments associated with the weather station (thermometer, rain gauge, smartphone, tablet)
  • Coordinate and supervise the collection of location-based hazards and impacts, ensuring the engagement of HEWs and CAHWs, and community members.
  • Collect and record relevant information through interviews and field visits.
  • Check the accuracy and reliability of the collected data.
  • Periodically report on (i) the outcomes of conducted activities, (ii) any gaps and challenges faced by data collector (iii) any other observation and feedback.
  • Supporting supervision to data collectors on the use of data collection tools.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the realization of meeting with HEWs, CAWs including the community members, and local institutions for sharing the output of data collected and engaging the beneficiaries regarding the importance of monitoring, recording, and sharing weather, hazards, and impacts data
  • Coordinate the participatory discussion at community/MSIPs level of main outcomes and trends regarding weather, hazards and impacts, through a periodical interpretation of traditional/local knowledge and scientific data
  • Facilitate the interaction between different institutions and local organizations that can be involved and integrated during the implementation of the activity previously mentioned.
  • Being available through WhatsApp or Skype for flexible communication about issues on data collection and/or specific hazards monitoring

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies or equivalent
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in data collection and data analysis is mandatory
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in community programs with a supervision role is also mandatory
  • Excellent command of the Smartphone is mandatory, good knowledge in MS Office packages especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Previous experience in the use of mobile device and mobile app (such as OpenDataKit-ODK or KoBoToolboox) for field data survey is an asset
  • Basic knowledge of climatology/meteorology, DRR and/or Early Warning Systems is also an asset
  • Very good experience in community dialogue and community engagement/mobilization
  • Strong communication, coaching and networking skills
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Very good knowledge of local languages and culture
  • Flexibility to travel to remote areas Ability to work under pressure, in autonomy, with limited resources and minimal supervision
  • Experience in weather/climate data analysis is an asset
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS), cartography, spatial data and analysis is also an asset
