Operational Context

Under the supervision of the Senior Legal Officer, the responsibilities of the Associate Liaison Officer is to participate in activities aimed at providing  support to UNHCR Liaison Office to the African Union and Economic Commission for Africa ( UNHCR)  in support of its strategic partnership with the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa ( UNECA).

Functional statement  

  • Participate in relevant activities implemented by UNHCR  in coordination with the AU, UNECA , other UN agencies, embassies and NGOs in order to promote /implement UNHCR’s objectives and activities.
  • Support UNHCR advocacy strategies which are aimed at promoting the Global Compact on Refugees and inclusion of refugees in SDGs at relevant meetings and processes of the AU and UNECA.
  • Support and facilitate the participation of refugees, internally displaced persons and other persons of concern in key AU processes.
  • Assists in drafting statements, reports and relevant materials as required.
  • Assist UNHCR ’s participation in AU meetings, Regional Coordination Mechanism, UNLT, UNECA consultations and other meetings when appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Duration of Contract: FTA (1 Year)

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Field(s) of Education

  • Undergraduate degree (equivalent of a BA/BS) in Political Science, Economics, Law, Business Administration or related field. Graduate degree (equivalent of a Master’s) plus 2 years or Doctorate degree (equivalent of a PhD) plus 1 year of previous relevant work experience

Education & Professional Work Experience

Years of Experience / Degree Level

  • Previous Job Experience:  3 years
  • Job Experience relevant to the function:  3 years
  • In an International capacity:  1 year

Desirable qualifications and competencies

Essential/Desirable :

  • Communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Knowledge of English and local language
  • Additional  UN languages is desirable
