The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was established in 1970 with the support of Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden in collaboration with the Ethiopian government.
Mandates given to AHRI are to undertake biomedical, clinical and medical biotechnology research and adopt and implement scientific technologies to improve clinical care, health and well-being of Ethiopians; conduct clinical trials on new and improved medical diagnostic methods, vaccines and drugs to improve public health; build capacity of higher education and related institutions in the areas of biomedical, clinical and medical biotechnology research; and serve as a center of excellence in medical research and training
AHRI would like to hire qualified candidate Associate Researcher I position for its Adama Research Project.
The role of the Associate Researcher I
Lund University, Sweden, conducts medical research projects, mainly related to infectious diseases, based in a field research station in Adama since 2010. Since 2017, this research unit is affiliated both to Lund University and to AHRI, with research staff employed through AHRI.
In 2020, a new prospective long-term cohort study will be initiated at the Adama research site. The main purpose of this study is characterization of HIV transmission in Ethiopia.
The Associate Researcher I shall be based in the Lund University Adama research site and work closely with the project investigators and staff. The incumbent will have the following duties and responsibilities:
· Focal person for conduction of the cohort study referred to above, both with regard to planning, day-to-day supervision and practical execution of the project activities.
· Focal person for preparations and planning for launching of the cohort study
o Define timeline for preparations and launching of the new project;
o Prepare all the necessary standards of methods and checklist for the research project;
o Facilitate the import of essential reagents and consumables that are not available in Ethiopia through the AHRI system
· Request budget use for the research project and settle expenditure according to the institutional regulation;
· Closely work with health authorities at the zone, town, hospital and health center levels to guarantee all the necessary approvals for conduct of the research;
· Closely work with and supervise project staff at the research unit office as well as clinical investigators and lab technologists at the research sites;
· Build the capability of the staff and others who are engaged in the research project;
· Facilitate placement of students in accordance with a guidance from the principal investigator(s) of the research;
· Submit report on the activities and progress related to the research project;
· Undertake any other tasks related to the project
Job Requirements
Personal Specification: Essential Skills and Experience
- MD and master exam (in public health and/or medically related field) from an accredited institution and with a minimum of 4 years work experience.
- Experience in conducting or supervising health research
- Strong organizational skills, including compilation of detailed reports
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Ability to closely work with the project PI and study team to smoothly run the project
- Willingness to participate in field work in clinic sites in Adama and the surrounding uptake area
· Willingness to take up additional responsibilities and continuous training as needed
- Strong organizational skills; flexible to working off-working hours or weekends

Skills:
· Expert knowledge in Afaan Oromo, Amharic and English (spoken and written)

Employment Type: One year contract period with possible extension based on performance and budget availability
