Duty station: Addis Ababa

The Integrated Soil Fertility Management Project (ISFM+) contributes to improving soil fertility, soil health and productivity in selected areas of Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, Sidama and Tigray regions. It operates in 60 woredas (districts). The project promotes the integrated use of locally adapted and relevant ISFM technologies contributing to (a) increasing on-farm biomass production (b) reducing nutrient and biomass losses from the farming system and (c) improving the agronomic use efficiency of production inputs. The project aims at combining behavioral change communication strategies with farmer-acceptable and locally adapted soil fertility improvement technologies, including supply chain aspects for the sustainable supply of agricultural inputs. ISFM+ also aims to contribute to reduce the effects of climate change and monitor its impact on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Responsibilities

  • 50% Climate change: take full responsibility for the climate monitoring (adaptation and mitigation) and all other activities related to climate change engagement of ISFM+ project

50% M&E team: In discussion with the M&E team take responsibility for parts of the monitoring and the data collection from staff, partners, and other parties. Also contribute to aggregation, validation, evaluation and publication of data/results.

Tasks

The adviser will work in close coordination with ISFM+ federal- and regional-level staff

  • Liaise between the ISFM+ project, key partners in Ethiopia and steering unit based in Bonn on all topics related to climate change adaption and mitigation
  • Support the piloting of climate sensitive agriculture technologies together with the ProSilience/Agroecology component of ISFM+
  • Assess opportunities for new partnerships in the area of climate change (Public-Private Partnership (DeveloPPP) or MoUs), involving other actors, as appropriate
  • Identify skill gaps of key partners on the climate change issues and facilitate relevant trainings for partners at the Directorate, the regional BoAs and at woreda level
  • Supporting the co-ordination, planning, and execution, of various M&E activities like surveys or regular data collection from relevant partners (especially from the woreda offices of agriculture and the regions)
  • Data entry and aggregation as required, also using various digital tools
  • Ensure data quality and integrity as well as personal data protection of all project data
  • Build the capacity of partners on data recording sheets, crop cuts and other M&E topics
  • Coordinate external consultants and reviewers missions to the field/partners
  • Compile regular reports and communicate key findings to the appropriate agencies
  • Represent GIZ-ISFM+ in relevant events (especially within the climate cluster)
  • Closely interact and work with GIZ – ISFM+ project staff, other GIZ staff responsible for climate change action, other agency staff, and government partners
  • Perform other assignments as required

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • MA in climate studies, agricultural economics, rural development, or related fields with an agriculture background is preferred.

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in the areas of agriculture, M&E, statistics, or climate change

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Effective communication, including writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication
  • Sound understanding of climate policy and the interlinkage between climate change and agriculture
  • Excellent customer service and client relations skill
  • Organization and time management skills
  • Good collaboration and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to use computer and software and technologies for data collection and organization (especially Excel skills)
  • Knowledge about GIZ internal tools like survey solutions
  • Other M&E tools like ODK, KoBo, etc. an advantage
