Introduction:

The Brooke is a leading UK equine welfare charity which has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa. The Brooke aims to improve the welfare of working equines, together with the livelihoods of people dependant on these animals. Brooke Ethiopia (B-Eth) is entering a new Strategic phase and by the year 2020, the Brooke Ethiopia will sustainably improve the equine welfare of some of the neediest rural and urban equines in Ethiopia. In order to achieve this, the role of Construction Supervisor is critical.

Main purposes of the jobs: The purpose of the Construction Supervisor’s position is to design, prepare bill of quantities, tender documents and schedule of implementation, facilitate and supervise site construction works of the project as per the standard design, specification and guidelines of the project program.  Ensures the full participation of communities and counterparts in project activities and compliance with design specifications and standards.

 

Main Task and responsibilities:

 

a.       Ensures that adequate information is collected at each project office for the plan to be sound and community needs are included in the plan and integrity of plan with other development activities;

b.      Comes up with draft construction activities, annual operational plan for discussion at the project level and develop the final version along with its implementation;

c.       Prepares all the drawings, designs, work and materials specifications (bill of quantities) and ensures approval by concerned authority before commencing the construction work

d.      Discusses with community members and conduct detail investigation for the available local construction resources and materials which lessens the constructions cost of the schemes.

e.      Provides technical assistance to counterparts with regard to technical design when required

f.        Ensures full participation of communities and concerned line departments at all levels;

g.       Follow-up timeliness of the payments to the project beneficiaries as per the agreed upon post surveying measurements output

h.      Establishes good working relationship with local officials woredas level government bodies and other stakeholders

i.         Keeps up to date with developments in the sector, including best practice examples and ensures ongoing personal development and learning;

j.        Works closely with field staff and the communities to initiate project activities and to disseminate information.

k.       Prepares and submits reports to the regional coordinator and construction officer on field activity progress.

l.         Meets the Brooke standards of equine welfare training centre and water trough construction and customer services standards etc ; and assist in resolving problems arising in construction work and help in the system improvements.

m.    Responsible for the construction budget not to exceed from the planned budget and play a vital role in monitoring project expenditures. In case there are variances; the supervisor has to notify to the regional program coordinator for implementing corrective actions.

n.      Maintain safe, secure, healthy working environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, complying legal regulations.

Job Requirements

 A) Education/Training

Required:

Degree in Hydraulics /Water resource/ Civil Engineering or equivalent.

Desired:

MSc. in Civil/Hydraulic Engineering/ Water Engineering or related.

 

B) Experience

5 years for BSc and 3 years for MSc.
