- Background
The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) was established in 2007 with a task of offering quality education and capacity training in the specialised field of peace and security to students and other stakeholders, as well as foster peace and security through research, dialogue and outreach activities in Ethiopia, the greater Horn of Africa and across Africa.
IPSS is seeking a highly skilled and senior professional to fill the position of Senior Researcher for the project ‘‘Accessing Labor Migration in the Horn of Africa: The case of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia in the Gulf Countries’. The project aims to have a better understanding of the major corridors of migration used by migrants and refugees from the listed countries and In-depth knowledge about the impact and influence that migration has on women by conducting desk research and having awareness-raising activities and programs.
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and project countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and
Somalia)
Core tasks and responsibilities
The senior researcher:
will be responsible for the production of an evidence-based research on the above thematic area in the countries concerned;
will be able sub-contract to other qualified and professional researchers who individually support him/her to conduct research in the above-listed countries;
will take a lead in developing and submission of the inception, interim, draft and final research reports;
will oversee and manage the overall progress of the research and the activities of in-country researchers regarding the whole project, consolidate the research report and present findings at validation workshop(s);
will take the comments and suggestions during the workshop and submit a final draft to IPSS;
will work closely and under the guidance of APSP/IPSS Head of Research.
Contract duration
Approximately six months.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and experience:
Minimum second degree in Political Science, Global Studies, Peace and Security Studies, Development Studies or any other related field of fields in Social Sciences (PhD strongly preferred);
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the thematic area, labour laws and the countries concerned;
Demonstrable experience in undertaking high-quality evidenced-based research on the thematic area and the countries listed;
Strong research methodologies, communications skills and attention to details;
Confident use of IT systems and packages, including search engines, Microsoft
Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and qualitative and quantitative data analysis tools;
Fluent in written and spoken English and working knowledge of the French and
Arabic languages preferred;
Good knowledge of the African development landscape;
Highly organized and capable of operating with minimal support/supervision;
Self-motivated, adaptable and flexible.
