Role description:

With support from Simprints, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MoH) is looking for a DevOps engineer to support the Electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS) project, the MoH’s flagship initiative to modernize and digitize the health system of Ethiopia. eCHIS is primarily a mobile application that is built for rural health workers to deliver tailored services to families and therefore improve health outcomes. It incorporates biometric technology to ensure that appropriate services are delivered to the right people at the right time, minimizing waste and waiting time, while improving continuity of care. Working in this project, you will have the opportunity to leave your fingerprint in an application that will have a direct impact on the lives of millions of rural Ethiopians.

You will be joining a tight-knit team of 8 developers, DevOps Engineers, and domain experts (system analysts). We work together very closely, with mutual understanding and providing support to each other. This role benefits from free gym access at the MoH premises and, if interested, will also have the opportunity to participate in field-based activities to better understand existing paper-based workflows and community health systems serving Ethiopia’s most vulnerable citizens.

Responsibilities:

The Engineer provides technical support to the overall functioning of the eCHIS web-based and mobile software developed by the Ministry of Health. The engineer works in close collaboration with the software development team members. Detailed responsibilities include:

  • Administer and maintain the eCHIS backend infrastructure
  • Develop and implement a scale-up plan for eCHIS backend infrastructure
  • Automate server environment setups, automate provisioning access in Databases, Linux
  • Monitor, prevent, and troubleshoot security related issues
  • Monitor and troubleshoot server related issues
  • Provide assistance in testing and solving programming bugs and other issues
  • Actively participate in providing training as well as organize software demonstrations for various FMoH, Regional and Partner groups in a well-organized and professional manner

Job Requirements

Must-have​​Qualifications:

  • Experience in server orchestration or automation/configuration management using Ansible
  • Strong background in Linux/Unix Administration
  • Experience in virtualization of environments, like XenServer
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL and NoSQL (Redis, CouchDB, Elasticsearch)
  • Excellent Python/Django skills
  • Experience with Docker, Kafka

Nice-to-have Qualifications:

  • Experience with Java, Tomcat
