Description

Background

Christian Aid exists to create a world where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty. We are a global movement of people, churches and local organisations who passionately champion dignity, equality and justice worldwide. We are the changemakers, the peacemakers, the mighty of heart.  Christian Aid in Ethiopia has three strategic priority areas. These are climate justice, Economic justice, humanitarian/resilience and addressing Gender and social inclusion as a cross cutting priority.

The project “Enset from Living Larder to Wealth Creator for Resilient Highland Communities in Southern Ethiopia, Wolayita Zone” is 24 months’ project. The project is implemented in Ethiopia in SNNP regions in 2 districts called Boloso Sore and Damot Pulassa. The action will be implemented by a consortium of International and National NGOs (Christian Aid Ethiopia and SOS Sahel Ethiopia) and a Social Enterprise, Industree Foundation.

The aim of the project is to improve the resilience capacity of the targeted households in Damot Pulasa and Boloso Sore to cope up with future shocks by enhancing incomes through introduction of innovative technologies and linkages with new, rewarding and sustainable markets

By introducing new processing technology, diversify livelihood options on-farm and off-farm works to create rural jobs for unemployed youth and women and improving practices that will ensure long-term sustainability, the action will address key challenges with food security, livelihoods and large migration.

This will be achieved by enabling clients to diversify and increase incomes by selling high value and diversified Enset products, enhance the link between research, extension, markets and policy making processes, strengthen the capacity of women owned enterprises to engage in decision making processes & empower women with agency and voice; influence policies and practices to leverage institutional and systemic changes to transform Enset culture. The action will build on exiting local partnerships and established relationship and buy-in of government and private sector players, already active in similar initiatives.

More productive livelihoods are believed to promote stability and reduce migration in the target areas by enabling the target groups to earn a viable income from their land.

Christian Aid is committed to providing a safe and trusted environment for every person connected to the work we do; and to preventing any type of unwanted behaviour including sexual harassment and exploitation, abuse, and financial misconduct.
