Plan International Ethiopia is looking for a Gender Specialist for an anticipated USAID-funded Youth Community Development activity in Ethiopia. The successful candidate will based in Addis Ababa or in any Program Area Offices of Plan International Ethiopia.  The position directly reports to Deputy Chief of Party.

The Gender Specialist is responsible for providing leadership to ensure that project activities address the gender roles of youth in livelihoods development and in the workforce; in accessing market information and networks; in linking to financial services through savings and credit; and in creating recognized and appreciated roles in the community. This position is contingent upon award of the project by the donor.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide technical leadership surrounding the engagement of young women and young men in livelihoods development and in the workforce; in accessing financial networks and services; and in establishing for themselves and their peers, respected positions at the community level.
  • Provide state-of-the-art guidance in the gender-informed design, development, and implementation of activities that lead to gender-transformative change, change that is captured by gender-sensitive project indicators, sex- and age-disaggregated data, and in data-gathering and analysis modalities.
  • Design gender-sensitive activities in conjunction with local government officials, businesses, and community role models, leaders, and gender champions that address the gendered needs of young people and promote their engagement and inclusion in a community’s economic, social, and civic spheres as productive, vocal, and valued community members.
  • Design positive youth development scenarios in which young women can flourish through their access to and mastery of hard skills that lead to income generation and soft skills that lead to self-confidence, leadership, and gaining voice in the community.
  • Support positive youth development work that facilitates young men becoming productive community members who support gender equality in the home, in economic life, and in the community

Job Requirements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in gender issues as they relate to livelihoods development through entrepreneurship and formal workforce engagement.
  • Bachelor’s degree in International Development, sociology, ethnology, anthropology, education or other relevant degree in social science.
  • Work experience leading gender-related projects with regards to community development
  • Work experience in effective development and execution of gender-specific trainings and other capacity development endeavors.
  • Work experience on USAID projects is strongly preferred.
  • Work experience in Ethiopia highly preferred.
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills are essential.

Desirable

  • Previous INGO experience in a similar position
