 ROLE PURPOSE AND KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: 

The Graphics Designer and Digital communications Coordinator creates and shares digitally engaging and on-brand graphics and other content for a variety of internal and external media.

The post holder will be responsible for implementing the overall communications strategy of the country office with special focus on developing and sharing content in graphics for social media and across our internal and external digital platforms including but not limited to our website, workplace, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other channels. The post holder will

For Graphics Design: 

  • Study discuss and design briefs and determine requirements for each content
  • Schedule design and digital communications pieces or projects and define timeline and cost
  • Conceptualize visuals based on requirements
  • Prepare rough drafts and present ideas
  • Develop illustrations, logos and other designs using software or by hand in conformity to the Save the Children branding requirement
  • Use the appropriate colours and layouts for each graphic adhering to the Save the Children branding requirement
  • Work with copywriters and creative director to produce final design
  • Test graphics across various media
  • Amend designs after feedback
  • Ensure final graphics and layouts are visually appealing, factually correct  and on-brand
  • Serve as a brand champion of the country office

For Digital Communications:

  • Design and develop a digital communications plan for the country office that includes annual plans
  • Design and develop a creative, engaging and up-to-date digital media content and keep a strict digital  calendar for each week and implement it
  • Prepare, refine and distribute content for all digital platforms
  • Engage with feedback on digital media appropriately and manage content generated as a result of feedback
  • Prepare weekly report on digital outreach and engagement
  • Design creative ways of boosting our digital communications

REPRESENTATION

The post holder represents Save the Children values and principles in interactions with staff and external audiences, including frequent interaction with partners and technical staff.  These values and principles include commitment to the mission of Save the Children, team orientation, accountability, integrity, and ambition.  It is expected that the post holder will demonstrate initiative and leadership including introducing systems and procedures to strengthen the public image of Save the Children.  It is also expected that the person in this position will also have a deep understanding of political situation of the country to be able to successfully raise the external profile of the Save the Children while reducing the overall risk to the organization.  The post holder will also frequently travel to field locations to support graphics and digital content development throughout the country and understand our programs.  S/he will work very closely with the Humanitarian and Internal Communications Managers and the rest of the program implementation team.

  • Dimensions: Save the Children works in all regions in Ethiopia except Beneshangul Gumuz with a current staff reaching 1,800.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION

  • Bachelors of Art in Fine Arts or related fields
  •  At least 8 years of direct experience as professional graphics designer, out of which at least 2 years of experience managing digital platforms for a credible organization

EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED

  • At least five years of relevant experience in a credible media organisation or printing press, branding agencies  as lead Graphics Designer
  • At least two years of experience in digital communications, website and social media platform management  with government, media agency, private sector or humanitarian or development agency
  • Experience of delivering results in a high-paced and challenging environment
  • The ability to digest complex information, quickly, and express this crisply and clearly
  • An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritize an unpredictable workload and solve problems quickly with limited support
  • Highly organized and able to solve problems quickly
  • Excellent relationship building skills within and outside of Save the Children
  • Excellent IT skills with understanding of effective visual communications for diverse audiences
  • Excellent understanding of communications, media, events and campaigning activities
  • Excellent writing skills, and the ability to produce compelling communications products in English, and Amharic with minimal supervision
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of Save the Children. In particular, a good understanding of the Save the Children mandate and child focus, and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support

HIGHLY DESIRED

  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills producing high quality English-language materials for a wide range of different audiences including donors, journalists and the 'public'
  • Experience of delivering training, presentations and other capacity building activities to varied audiences, ideally within a country programme.
  • Experience in multimedia content development; photography and video production and editing
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy, and the ability to advise on sensitive issues
