Description

The Haile-Manas Academy (HMA) is a new private co-ed residential school that will provide Ethiopia’s most promising secondary students a world class education and will help transform the education available to all Ethiopian students.  HMA is located in Debre Birhan.

HMA is seeking a School Nurse to support the well-being, academic success and overall health of HMA students. The School Nurse will direct the HMA Wellness Center, and in that capacity will create and implement appropriate health related policies and protocols for students and staff, and oversee the provision of health-related care consistent with such policies.

The School Nurse will report to the HMA Deputy Head of School.  This position is open immediately.

Main Responsibilities

  • Developing health related policy and procedures for HMA that take into account the needs of a residential school, including but not limited to
  • Vaccination and health screening policies for new students
  • Ensuring that student health records are current and each student has the proper exams and vaccinations, including as may be required by the Ministry of Health
  • Protocols for storing and administering medications
  • Protocols for providing services in the evenings, weekends and overnights
  • Protocols for health emergencies
  • Protocols for assisting students too ill to be cared for on campus
  • Protocols for communications with families and assisting families with locating outside care when needed
  • Developing health record keeping and maintaining privacy, including record keeping of all Wellness Center visits and dispensed medications
  • Performing student health screenings, including vision, hearing, body mass index and mental health screenings
  • Developing plans of student care based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes and the evaluation of care
  • Administering first aid to students, including as necessary administering medication and injections and making/changing dressings
  • Promote overall health education (eg positive health related habits such as proper handwashing, good nutrition, good exercise and sleep habits)
  • Monitoring the school environment to prevent injury and ensure safety; participating in developing school safety plans and emergency policies
  • Overseeing infection, prevention and control measures, including with respect to Covid-19 prevention protocols and possible infections
  • Collaborating with other HMA professionals, such as food service personnel, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors, to promote student well-being
  • Organizing first aid training for HMA faculty and staff
  • Responding to medical emergency situations, including after hours if necessary
  • Maintaining the Wellness Center, including keeping the treatment and resting rooms hygienic, comfortable and stocked with needed supplies, ensuring the secure storage of any medications and excellent supervision of students at all times
  • Ensuring adherence to any applicable regulations of the Ministry of Health or other regulatory entity
  • Researching and establishing relationships with a network of doctors and clinics in Debre Birhan and Addis Ababa to ensure access to emergency and specialized treatment for students and staff when necessary
  • Carrying out orders of a physician for medication, treatment and care of students
  • Keeping records and preparing and submitting periodic reports
  • Participating in preparing an annual budget and managing expenditures according to plan budget preparation of the service
  • Performing other related duties as may be assigned by school administration

Job Requirements

Experience and Qualifications

Education/experience

  • At least five years experience in nursing
  • At least 1,000 clinical hours within the past 3 years
  • A current RN license; AND
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in a health-related field relevant to school nursing
  • Familiarity with relevant Ministry of Health and other regulatory requirements governing nurses and school clinics
