Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide basic first-aid treatment as needed
  • Respond appropriately to emergency calls
  • Assess a person’s condition and know how to provide proper medical care
  • providing emergency medical care to: ü assist in emergency childbirth, ü manage general medical complaints of altered mental status, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic reaction, seizures, poisoning behavioral emergencies, environmental emergencies, and psychological crises. Additional care is provided based upon assessment of the patient and obtaining historical information.
  • ventilating patients;
  • administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including use of automated external defibrillators;
  • providing prehospital emergency medical care of simple and multiple system trauma such as controlling hemorrhage, treatment of shock (hypoperfusion), bandaging wounds,  immobilization of painful, swollen, or deformed extremities, immobilization of painful, swollen, or deformed neck or spine;
  • Put together an initial plan of care to quickly stabilize an individual in distress
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with other first responders and emergency medical staff, and personnel
  • Document medical care given to patients
  • Report patient observations to appropriate medical professionals
  • Maintains clinical records in line with regulations and standards
  • Inventory, replace, and clean supplies and equipment after use
  • cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures,
  • makes careful check of all equipment so that the emergency car or ambulance is ready for the next run
  • maintains emergency car or ambulance in efficient operating condition
  • ensures that the emergency car or ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat orderly condition
  • in accordance with local, state or federal regulations, decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure.
  • Conduct other additional related activities given by supervisor.

Job Requirements

Qualification

  • University degree in nursing or in Emergency and ICU Specialty from an accredited academic institution
  • Must have Certificate of Conformity (COC)
  • Practical experience working with patients is required
  • Having relevant certificates particularly in medical emergency service is preferable.

Required skills and knowledge

  • ability to assess patients’ conditions, dealing with trauma and cardiac emergencies, clearing obstructed airways, using field equipment, and handling emergencies.
  • Ability to recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care;
  • Ability to administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition;
  • Ability to lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury; and,
  • Ability to perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description.

Important Qualities

  • Compassion. EMTs must be able to provide emotional support to patients in an emergency, especially patients who are in life-threatening situations or extreme mental distress.
  • Interpersonal skills. EMTs usually work on teams and must be able to coordinate their activities closely with others in stressful situations.
  • Listening skills. EMTs need to listen to patients to determine the extent of their injuries or illnesses.
  • Physical strength. EMTs need to be physically fit. Their job requires a lot of bending, lifting, and kneeling.
  • Problem-solving skills. EMTs must evaluate patients’ symptoms and administer appropriate treatments.
  • Speaking skills. EMTs and paramedics need to clearly explain procedures to patients, give orders, and relay information to others.
