Organizational Description: 

Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA) is a legally registered, autonomous, and not-for-profit professional association established in 1992 and re-registered under the new civil society proclamation. EMwA operates in all regions of Ethiopia by using and works for the quality of midwifery education and care. EMwA has been a member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) since 1993.

The primary goal of EMwA is to contribute towards the reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity in Ethiopia, which are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) global initiatives. EMwA envisions to see every woman, newborn, and their family have access to standard midwifery care. The mission of the association is to promote and enhance the expansion, performance and status of midwifery profession through adapting quality and evidence based practices; adhering to the code of ethics and conduct empowering the professionals.

To achieve the desired results, EMwA would like to hire competent candidate for the following position.

Position summary:  

The Program Officer reports to the Project Coordinator /Project Manager is responsible for coordinating and facilitating Project activities and closely work with partners. S/he ensures that regular monitoring and evaluation of project progresses are conducted and findings of best practices are documented and feed in to the planning process.

Major Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Organize and coordinate trainings for EMwA regional branch focal representatives in program management & data collection procedures for program/project implementation.
  • Establish & create common understanding among implementing partners and ensure smooth implementation of the project.
  • Coordinate and conduct high-level sensitization meeting to create awareness of project with MoE, MoH & Midwifery Educators as deemed necessary.
  • Prepare detail operational activity plan in collaboration with the Project Coordinator/ program Manager.
  • Facilitate the implementation of planned activities through proper coordination, provision of technical support
  • Organize and facilitate trainings as per the plan, and prepare training reports
  • Organize and conduct need based training for health workers at various health facilities, and teaching institutions
  • Report on project progress and communicate relevant information including monthly, quarterly and annual report to project manager.
  • Develop training plan of action and prepare budget based on the plan
  • Create smooth relationship with trainees, government bureaus and other partners at different level.
  • Take part in program planning, proposal writing, documenting best practices and monitoring project activities
  • Take responsibility in organizing and updating the necessary information and program of the teaching institutions and the affiliated health facilities
  • Be involved in updating the data of midwives, students, teaching institutions and health facilities as needed
  • Take responsibilities in following the implementation and outcome of trainings in the respective project implementation sites of health and teaching institutions
  • Take part in preparation of magazines, newsletter and other publications of the program /project achievements as needed
  • Ensure that regular monitoring and evaluation of project progresses are conducted and findings of best practices are documented and feed in to the planning process.
  • Make sure that any budget request is prepared in detail and in line with the agreement and policy and also the plan in the project document
  • Do other activities as per the need of the organization and guidance from the supervisor.

Reports to: Project Coordinator/Program manager

Length of Contract:  Three Months (April to June-2020) and could be extended based on performance and budget availability.

Job Requirements

Educational Requirement:  

  • MPH / MSC or BSc with a background in midwifery, Nursing, Health Education or other health related fields.

Work experience and required skills:

  • 4yrs/6yrs experience out of which 2/3 years should be in managerial /supervisory or similar position. Experience in I/NGO environment is advantageous.
  • Experience in managing/coordinating health programs in NGO and familiarity with the Ethiopian health sector transformation plan
  • Proven experience in program management or coordination with FMOH & RHBs.
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience of working in NGO section and MNCH area at National and /or International level.
  • Experiences facilitating different training activities at a time.
  • Having experience in Reproductive Health Programs.

  • Computer Training Certificate
  • Project /Program Management training Certificate is an added value

  • Excellent analytical skills and software’s (Stata, SPSS, Epi-info, open code )

Technical skills

  • Well acquainted with Ethiopian Labour Law
  • Good HR management skills, with the ability to demonstrate skills in leading a multi-disciplined  and multi-cultural team;
  • Strong MS office and the ability to use new technologies.
  • Must also be able to quickly think a problem through and find solutions;

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Amharic

Desired Criteria (An Asset)

  •  Being a Midwife or having Midwifery background
