Green Way Farms PLC is currently seeking a professional, high-performance individual to serve as a Supply Chain Manager.

This individual will have the unique opportunity to help shape the future of a young, environmentally, and socially-conscious agriculture business in Ethiopia, one of Africa’s most promising economies. Ideal candidates have a passion for East Africa, a dedication to environmental sustainability, and the ability to successfully support the company’s horticulture production efforts as the company scales over the next 5 years to produce more than 500 tons of produce annually with several hundred partner farmers.

Background

Green Way Farms is a socially-oriented agribusiness that produces organic produce in an environmentally-sustainable, organic manner in conjunction with a network of smallholder farmers.

The company currently operates from its Butajira Production Area with a team of 100 staff and 100+ Partner Farmers. Green Way maintains a facility (the Farmer Service Center) with a cold store, nursery, and pack-house in Butajira, SNNPR. The company exports regularly to Amsterdam, London, and Dubai.

As a young, but growing company, Green Way will develop new facilities and expand to at least one new production areas in the next 9 months with a vision to become East Africa’s largest organic specialty food company. Notably for this position, the company is significant increasing its exports in the next year, important new equipment, and expanding to new location.

The Senior Staff at the organization are a group of highly talented professionals with experience in Ethiopian export horticulture, and agricultural development sectors, as well as direct experience in the Ethiopian start-up context. Each member of the team has a passion for improving the lives of smallholder farmers and increasing access to organically and sustainable grown, high-nutritious foods, and is committed to seeing the company realize its core objectives.

Job Requirements

 

Mission of Role

To establish high-quality sustainable supply chains and logistics systems for the company staff and products grown by Partner Farmers, minimizing product losses and perishability; to establish data and information systems and conduct analysis that improves supply chain efficiency on both Inputs to farms and Outputs from farms; to coordinate all procurement for products found in Addis Ababa and abroad

 

Responsibilities & Activities

Production

  • Activity: Check-in regularly with all teams and proactively manage the Supply Chain Officer to ensure procurement of needed materials
  • Outcome: A minimum of a month’s supply of all produce packaging is always available and ready for use. All regular materials needed by company staff are available within 30 days of the request, when requested on the correct schedule
  • Activity: Manage import process of materials such as cooling facilities, vehicles, and seeds. This includes coordination with banks, customs, the Ethiopian Investment Committee, international suppliers
  • Outcome: All materials approved for import are supplied on schedule and without implication. All data and documents used for import process are stored and saved in an appropriate way for future reference, including Voucher book management and reporting, NBE import reporting, and cost accumulation summaries
  • Activity: Adjust company policies, conduct research, and engage vendors to ensure the company is procuring items as cost effectively as possible
  • Outcome: The company is procuring all materials as cheaply or cheaper as any other comparable company in Ethiopia

Logistics

  • Activity: Supervise a Supply Chain Officer who coordinates across the Production, Packhouse and PDSM teams to ensure all vehicles are ready and running on time.
  • Outcome: No logistics delays are caused by a lack of vehicles when requested 72 hours in advance
  • Activity: Establish and maintain strong relationships with GWF partners
  • Outcome: The company maintains healthy relationships and up-to-date contracts (as needed) with 3rd parties involved in the supply chain activities including, but not limited to federal police and freight forwarders.
  • Activity: Vehicle management and transport logistics
  • Outcome: All company owned and rented vehicles are monitored and ready for operation any time required. Establish regular inspections and service schedule with SC Officer and Drivers.
  • Activity: Map out, organize, and maintain procurement and logistics critical company datasets used for planning and daily operations
  • Outcome: All company supplier data is cataloged in an easily searchable, accessible, and usable data repository
  • Activity: Strengthen the company’s complete cold chain, including the handling in product in Europe and Middle East
  • Outcome: All perishable product travels from the company’s cold stores to the end buyer at the ideal temperature for that product

  • Complete any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor in support of the company's success and growth

Required Experience

  • Undergraduate degree from a top-tier university with a minimum 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  • At least 5 years of experience working in one of the following fields: supply chain management, Procurement, logistics, customer relationship management, client/vendor management
  • Experience leading projects, managing and owning responsibility for all aspects, from conception to execution
  • Experience in information management for supply chains, including collecting, organizing and analyzing data and information for better operational decision making
  • Experience working in environments that are regularly changing and where results are generated not behind a desk, but out of the office with external stakeholders
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about the Food Industry, Horticulture, and International Business.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working at an early-stage organization
  • Experience with financial management systems
  • Experience managing vendor relationships
  • Experience in the process of Import – exporting

 

 

Term

 

 

The Supply Chain Manager must commit to a minimum 36-month term, signing an initial 12- month contract.

Reporting

The position reports to the Managing Director and the Director of Operations

Location

 

This position is based in Addis Ababa with 20-30% of time visiting the company’s Farmer Service Centers (production sites) in Butajira, SNNPR and elsewhere.
