Description

The African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) programme was implemented by UN Women in collaboration with the African Union Commission and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is designed to expose and equip young girls with digital literacy, CODING and personal development skills.

The first phase of the AGCCI included Coding Camps in countries across Africa targeting young girls aged between 17 - 20 years. The first Coding Camp was held in Addis Ababa 2018 with 88 young girls from 32 AU Member States. Followed by a regional coding camp in South Africa and national coding camps in three different regions of Ethiopia that targeted 444 girls.

Furthermore, AGCCI also engaged in Mainstreaming ICT, CODING and gender into the national curricula by closely working with Ministries of Education and ICT in countries across Africa to mainstream ICT, gender and CODING into the national curricula. The first AGCCI Mainstreaming of ICT, Coding and Gender into National Curricula training workshop which held in Addis Ababa in July 2019. The training targeted focal persons from various relevant ministry personnel, from Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology or Ministry of ICT from 9 African countries. The Training of Trainers (ToT) session for attendees was conducted to provide skills that will allow them to be trainers and duplicate the training to the selected staff in their respective ministries in their countries.

In line with this, UN Women Ethiopia under its Women Economic Empowerment program is implementing the African Girls Can Code initiative Ethiopia project and will engage with Federal Ministry of Education of Ethiopia on developing a procedure/ manual for Gender Sensitive Education and careers advice to support secondary schools to inform and advice young girls on education and careers in ICT and coding.

PURPOSE OF THE CONSULTANCY

To develop a procedure/ manual for Gender Sensitive Education and Careers Advice to support secondary schools to inform and advice young girls on education and careers in ICT and coding, ThereforeUN Women Ethiopia is seeking the services of a consultant to develop the procedure/ manual. The finalized procedure /manual will then be printed for use by stakeholders at the national level in Ethiopia.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the consultant will be to provide scholarly and technical related services, including:

  • Develop a detailed modality of no more than 40 pages on how to integrate Gender Sensitive Education and Careers Advice to support secondary schools to inform and advice young girls of education and careers in ICT and coding.
  • The final procedure/ manual should clearly and concisely establish a step by step guidance on how to provide Gender Sensitive Education and careers advice to support secondary schools to inform and advice young girls of education and careers in ICT and coding.
  • Subsequently, to better implement and for ease of the operationalization of the procedure/ manual short version is required specifying on a practical and actionable ways to present the manual to the relevant ministries preferably in the form of Power Point.
  • A substantive revision and fact checking as appropriate and raising any related queries within the partners (UN Women, Federal Ministry of Education Ethiopia and Ministry of Innovation and Technology).
  • Ensuring consistency of style and formal tone as well as clarity of expression while working on the procedure/manual and revision where necessary according to the inputs received from partners.
  • Ensuring citation accuracy using footnotes. All references and sources should be correct, consistent, properly numbered, and appropriately positioned and formatted.
  • Ensuring correlation between the list of acronyms and their occurrence throughout the text.
  • Ensuring that figures, charts, graphs, boxes and tables are correctly identified and cross-referenced in the text, and that data from them are accurately reflected in the document.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Advanced qualifications in Social Sciences such as Gender and Women's Studies, International Studies or related field. Additional qualifications in working on projects/programmes such as Girls in ICT, Coding or STEM is strongly preferred

Expierence

  • At least 10 years relevant experience
  • Experience working on policy and/or research related to only girls in ICT; demonstrated skills in gender analysis, particularly in relation to ICT and Coding.
  • Substantial experience in content editing and writing as well as publication of manual/strategy of similar nature.
  • Familiarity with UN and report writing style preferred.
  • Demonstrated substantive and technical knowledge to meet requirements of the consultancy tasks.

Language

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Computer skills: full command of Microsoft Word.
